Katsucon 2013

One of my favorite costumes from the weekend - this is such a clever interpretation the Forest Spirit! This lady added lots of neat touches, like kodama peeping out from the headdress and the sprouts coming out of her shoes.

EMERALD CITY COMIC CON: DAY 2

BY OUR BLACK HAND SPREAD THE PAIN

WOW my hair looks red in that lighting.  I swear it’s not actually that red most of the time.

(Pics by Hieroglyph Photography, obtained via dubious means by my main girl Kaztiel, costumes by me, modeled by myself (Black Lantern Yori) and NapoldeInLove (Abraxas))

MOAR EMERALD CITY PICS

Unfortunately I can’t actually POST these ones here because this site requires that you purchase them and while I have a coupon code that allows me to download them it also requires that I enter a credit card number ANYWAY for some reason, an item that I do not currently possess >_< BUT I CAN LINK THEM.

Saturday pics of me as Black Lantern Yori

Saturday pics of NapoldeInLove as Abraxas, and of both of us together.

(Eternal sadness that apparently he didn’t use flash in these pics so we’re not lit up, but we still look pretty rad.)

The best part about the reflector dust that I ordered and used on Abraxas’ viral disc was that Cole Safety Products shipped it to me packaged in nothing more than a double layer of ziploc baggies.  It literally looked like they had sent me a kilo of cocaine.

Beta-testing at Kesomon’s apartment, our staging area.

Hilariously enough Abraxas’ disc dock being functional was actually a fortuitous accident!  I literally made her disc the day before the con.

Just so people know, this costume consists of:

  • a black off-brand morph-suit, which was my idea and probably not the best choice of purchases—but hell, we can deal with the weird gloves next con;
  • skin-tight black top, bottom, and shapewear to hide my panty lines;
  • a cloak made from thin black pleather, which was light enough to wear and move in but heavy and water-proof enough to use as a coat outside the convention;
  • a cowl piece for the hood from the same material, which could be removed for ease of wear and for possible later additions;
  • a snap strip, to close the left shoulder;
  • a pair of tall pleather boots which could kill a man*;
  • at least a dozen yards of highlighter-yellow reflective tape;
  • several ounces of neon yellow fabric paint;
  • several sticks of hot-glue;
  • a frisbee;
  • foam board;
  • reflective/”fairy” dust;
  • thread;
  • and an allegedly hypothetical bottle of vodka.

When I first put on the cloak, I really, really didn’t want to take it off. It was surprisingly comfortable, especially after my last experience with pleather was a too-heavy Organization XIII coat. Both Expo and I can vouch for the fact that the cloak makes an excellent blanket.

I mentioned additions to the costume to Leah, and we’ll consider them for next time. Since the off-brand morph-suit had bad gloves, we’re considering building the claws and attaching them. In addition, I thought of stitching in an interior pocket, so I don’t need a purse, would be making a masquerade version of this costume.

Possible uses for this costume, I already have a black mask, which would need some theater glue to attach to my face, as well as the leftover fabric paint from the costume. I’d have to look into suits for a masquerade from there, but I may be interested in doing a play off a 1800s British officer’s coat, albeit in black pleather with yellow accents.

Expo was fun to work with and a good sport about the whole thing, even when circuitry happened. I paid for a majority of the supplies as well as a decent payment for the work she put into the cape and cowl. It ended up being around the $200 goal, as I’d wanted. I highly, highly recommend her if you live in the area and want to commission a costume. YOU SHOULD GO TALK TO EXPO.

Bonus trivia: I went to Sci-Fi Speed Dating in full costume and didn’t take down my hood til the very end. On Sunday I drew fanart of it at the Copic booth.

Hypothetical boozing aside, I honestly had a fantastic time building this costume, and I am still honestly floored by how well it turned out.  Thank you for giving me the excuse.

Improvements will definitely be a thing.  Still do want to apply the viral circuit lines to the bodysuit, whether via paint+reflector dust or reflective tape cutouts, along with working claws.  Also might wire the hood to maintain the peaked/triangular shape a bit better.  I will make you perfect.

cosplay isnt about

  • skin color
  • body type
  • who has the best cosplay

what cosplay is about

  • crying over your fabric
  • crying over props
  • crying over money
  • summoning satan so you can get it done before the con
  • procrastinating
  • finding virgins to sacrifice

ACCURATE.

owlberts Asked:
How did you manage to do the lights on your Abraxas cosplay? They look fantastic and I'm trying to make my our Tron cosplay.

I used reflective tape/fabric!  2” wide 20mm thick neon-yellow reflective tape for Abraxas’ circuits (it’s actually NapoldeInLove wearing that costume, not me), and silver/white reflective fabric from Seattle Fabrics for Black Lantern Yori (the costume I’m actually wearing).  They will light up under a camera’s flash or indirect lighting, and I’m super-impressed by how powerful the effect turned out to be with cameraflash.  I’m planning on doing a big visual tutorial post regarding the techniques I used pretty soon, so keep an eye out!
